Name Derivation Of Wonosobo Regency

The words Wonosobo derives from the two words, “WONO” means jungle and “SOBO” visiting. So, Wonosobo means a mountainous area with fascinating landscape which will attract people to visit it. The town of Wonosobo such a clean and beautiful environment that the urban moto ASRI, that means “Aman” (Save), “Sehat” (health), “Rapi” (neat) and “Indah” (beautiful).

The Legend Of Wonosobo

The folktale of Wonosobo began from the early seven tenth century with arrivals of the three figures called “KYAI KOLODETE”, “KYAI KARIM”, and KYAI WALIK”. Who came down to this land together with their families and relations. At the time, Wonosobo was a cluster of jungle. Those three were then regarded as the founders of Wonosobo. Kyai Walik was a town designer, Kyai Karim was believed to be one who put forwards a set of basic rules of  goverment. Kyai Kolodete’s part was not identified, expect that he was known as the rule of Dieng Plateau.

Wonosobo Regency is an otonomy area lead by a regent with the total weidth of 984,68 KM, it includes 15 sub districts and 265 villages.

Wonosobo is located 120 Km southwest of Semarang and 520 Km away from Jakarta. Wonosobo regency surounded by some neighberhood regencies : in the east is Magelang and Temanggung Regencies, in the south is Kebumen and Purworejo Regencies, in the west is Banjarnegara Regency, and in the north is Batang and Kendal Regencies.

Wonosobo lies between 270 and 2.250 above sea level with average temperature by day of 22′ – 30′ C and 15′ – 22 ‘C by night. During the days in july and August, it can reach 15′ – 22′ and even drop down 12′ – 0′ during nights.
